Calderdale Council has established a commercial procurement unit to renegotiate contracts. This has led to savings of £300k per year.
The unit supports the development of commercial procurement skills across the Council and has improved procurement procedures and processes. Various strands of work have been undertaken such as a supplier engagement programme which achieved cash savings from new ways of working or renegotiated contracts with key suppliers.
Work has also been undertaken in cooperation with all areas of the Council to improve procurement procedures and establish gateway boards and gatekeepers for specific areas of spend. Information has been collected and analysed to establish a full picture of spend across the Council.
Regular collaboration on procurement has been ongoing with other local authorities, especially York and Kirklees.
Savings from negotiations with key suppliers, improvements in procedures and the wider development of skills in relation to contracts and procurement have been achieved.
